Newell’s movie credits include Del Shores’ Daddy’s Dyin, Who’s Got the WillSordid LivesSouthern Baptist Sissies, and A Very Sordid Wedding. Other films include August Osage CountyThe GundownFirst Strike and Easy Rider 2 The Ride Back. On TV he’s worked on Just Add MagicCold CaseLas VegasArrested Development, Designing Women and Big Love. He is a founding member of the "L.A.MadDogs," one of the industry's busiest voice-over groups on How To Train Your Dragon, TransformersShrek 1 & 2, Titanic, etc. Newell's stage credits include the original productions of Del’s Cheatin, Daddy's Dyin'Sordid Lives and Southern Baptist Sissies. Newell has had an extensive career in commercials and voice-overs for over 40 years, an ex-Texan, he plays "General Sam Houston" as the host of the Texas History Museum’s "Texas Hall of Heroes" at the State Capitol in Austin. Newell has written, co-produced and performed in 33 hour-long radio dramas for the Autry Museum of Western Heritage for PBS. Newell performed as Neil Young's opening act "Dan Clear" for 84 shows in 1983-84. He was nominated for best supporting actor in The 2019 International Filmmaker Festival of World Cinema in London.
